Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Wheat doesn't let the fact that it doesn't have wings bring it down; it can jump remarkably high and far with enough exertion. It often does this to scare the other hatchlings, but it's all in good fun, and Wheat usually knows which dragons not to prank. Its endurance is also very high, allowing it to run for relatively long periods of time without getting tired too easily.
