Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Elwisia is a war orphan living in Tayli, her father missing in action and her mother dead of heartbreak. This may be an explanation for her unruly behavior. Although hale and hearty, Elwisia gives the adults a lot of trouble with her antics, getting into dangerous situations and provoking the other children with her abrasive personality. The adults have resigned themselves to simply giving her care, uncertain what to do with her and hoping it's just a phase she'll leave as she grows.
