Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Deritas is the Dark Star packmaster, leading the Vampire dragons within the whole of the Nightfyre Clan. Though at first the other dragons refused to let him near them or their eggs, over the years they have come to accept that his nature, and that of the other Vampire dragons in the Clan, is not of his choosing.

Once a month, any dragon pair that feels they may not be able to care for an egg may give the egg to his pack, knowing the risk a bite may pose but also knowing it may be their young's only chance for survival. In some cases, the bite of a Dark Star member will kill the egg. In many, it turns it, but now and then bitten eggs turn up missing... perhaps by the actions of other dragons within the Nightfyre Cavern.
