And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Grenque was a robust and dignified hatchling until she strayed too close to Devastior's den. The black dragon's agonizingly loud voice made Grenque completely lose her sense of hearing. She attempted to keep her disability hidden from the other dragons to avoid being frozen forever, but her efforts inevitably failed. As a result, she is forced to listlessly wander the cave as a hatchling forever. On the bright side, at least she can't hear the rude things the healthy dragons say about her.
