Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Cantal the Cheese Dragon lives in a pantry that has been specially built for him in one of the villages in the forest. It is a vast, house-sized place and is very humid, which is perfect for Cantal to live in comfortably. He will occasionally go on trips with one of the villagers if they are heading to the rainforest, but other than that he stays near to his pantry home so that he doesn't dry out too much. Cantal has a very loving nature, which endeared him to the villagers as soon as he hatched from his soft egg. This is the reason that he stays with them, because without them he would have probably died. In return for their kindness Cantal advises them on the best methods of cheese making, as nobody knows more about cheese than him, and has helped them create the famous 'Cantal' cheese.
