When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Penika is on the small side for a water dragon, being able to come quite close to land without needing to worry about beaching herself.  While not the most social of dragons, she does occasionally get lonely, since most water-dwelling dragons won't come near Dragonhaven Island for fear of encountering some left-over defense spell, and most land-dwelling dragons tend not to think much about those who dwell in water.  Carnelian Enchanter won Penika over by putting on a whole magic show just for her, and so far has kept his promise to visit regularly.  While he hasn't fulfilled his other promise yet of finding other aquatic dragons to keep her company, Penika understands that will take more time, and already feels less lonely.
