Seasonal Dragons take on the characteristics of the season during which they are born. Thus, eggs that are laid in spring match the pink flowers and green buds of spring, and those that are laid in the summer grow to depict the bright green of the forest trees and the yellow of the sun. Eggs laid in autumn display the bright colors of leaves falling from trees, and those that are laid during winter take on the appearance of the icy snow.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Karmanei was raised alongside the Bright-Breasted female named Liepa in the Mountains of Elgar. Their guardian, a 15 year old human girl named Flight, cared for them near the Lake of Elgar in a large cave. Karmanei spent much of her time as a hatchling following her older "sister" Liepa as the hatchling tried to discover new ways to give gifts to others. While loving Flight for her compassionate care and surprisingly sound advice, it was Liepa who Karmanei admired. When the two grew up, the Seasonal dragon left the shores of the Lake briefly to explore some of the other areas the vast region the Mountains of Elgar covered. When Karmanei returned, she was horrified to find her beloved Liepa permanently crippled due to the cruelty of Tartarus, a stone dragon also raised by Flight. Karmanei was one of many who wished for Tartarus' destruction, but when the High Family was founded, she retreated to the forest of Torhrutyr. Instead of getting involved she focuses on caring for Liepa.
