Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Heironymus stays in the Taylin orphanage not because he himself is an orphan but because his parents help run it. A rather moody child, he is angry and sullen over the fact that he is not treasured over the other children. The problem is that all the children are given great amounts of affection and kindness. His parents are split over hoping he will outgrow this and letting him continue being a brat.
