Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

In Rika's cave, black dragons serve as priests. Maeleficent is the high priestess. There is a significant amount of animosity between her and the elders of the cave. She often disagrees with their decisions, and seems to be out for herself and her daughter, Flaireon. For the longest time, it was thought that Maeleficent was barren. After many attempts to mate, she produced one daughter with a sunrise dragon. The affair was frowned upon by the other dragons, but what was done could not be undone. A cap is kept on the drama by the watchful eyes of Shadow of Mourning, who sees the good in Maeleficent but also knows her darkness.
