Script Dragons are named for the markings along their wings and sides that look almost like calligraphy. The patterns correspond to no known language, and are slightly different on every dragon. These dragons only develop the characteristic markings when they reach maturity, and they are fairly capable with magic once the patterns appear.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Illud is the clan's weirdo seer, healer, and name-giver. He's a part of the second wave of hatchlings, consisting of himself, Elunder (whose ever-changing name during her childhood lead Illud to be in charge of names), and Caedony. Elunder and Illud act as elders, the real decision makers of the clan if The Pillow Monarch is asleep or when Red Rory is not present on the surface, due to his responsibilities managing the dragons underwater.

Many see Illud as wise, while the rest find him quite aggravating. He doesn't need others to interpret his visions for him, yet he still relays many of them to others as almost indecipherable riddles! He spends most of his time misleading visiting humans into weird situations and 'side quests,' including Giles, who helps care for the eggs. He also spends his time coddling hatchlings and watching over clan members. During meetings, it is he who often directs the clan and bring topics into focus. His own young are often embarrassed by him and his jokes.
