Edmund Blackadder, Lord Blackadder, is a courtier at the court of Elizabeth, Queen of Engcave, also known as Queenie. Queenie is a spoiled chick of ill temper and childish temperament, and Blackadder along with other courtiers like Lord Melchett and Lord Percy Percy often struggles to fulfill the Queen's wishes—sometimes preemptively, although this has proven to be dangerous, as Queenie's desires ever so often switch to the exact opposite.

Blackadder is a chick of great wit and cleverness in his own right and doesn't have a need for his servant Baldrick's 'cunning plans'. Be it misleading the soon-to-be-widow of Lord Farrow or not repaying a loan given by the fearsome, allegedly baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wells, Blackadder manages to wriggle out of life-threatening situations unharmed, for he is one of Engcave's finest liars.
