Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

In olden times, there were stories that fascinated and frightened all those who heard them. Stories about an undead species of dragons called vampires were the ones which frightened young hatchlings. These stories told about how they would bite and kill those in an egg to make more of their kind, so when an unusual egg rolled into Shishiro's cave, every dragon froze. This egg held the first of a new brood- the Matriarch Kara.

Rejected by the rest of Shishiro's dragon, Kara grew to loathe them all. Only when the dragon Dream Walker approached her did she open up. Willing to take to new experiences, Kara approached the rest of the brood and was eventually accepted by all. Although Kara herself discourages the creation of new vampires, she will adopt all those who were rejected by other caves, gaining the title "Matriarch" in the process. Happy and content, Matriarch Kara watches over her undead kin knowing the rest of Shishiro's cave will always come to help if only asked.
