Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

The son of Sail Back and Amethyst Drake, Indigo Fringe is in every way his parent's child, inheriting his father's loyalty to Crystal Tiger Stripe's nomadic herd and his mother's caring nature. As part of Crystal Tiger Stripe's nomadic dragon herd, Indigo Fringe had to become strong and quick enough to keep up with the rest of the herd as soon as he hatched. For this reason, he had to pass up on a lot of normal dragon hatchling experiences, such as play, which makes interacting with other hatchlings very difficult for him.
