Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Merilissel patrols a third of the territory Cireth's pack inhabits, guarding her other dragons from her Zombies, on the orders of her leader Barien. She and her partner, the Vampire dragon, Caelven have an eight hour shift together during the day. Eight other Vampire-Guardian pairs cover the rest of the territory day and night so that someone is always on guard. If a pair is confronted by Zombies the Guardian shields the Vampire with their tail-shield while the Vampire spits venom at the Zombies. This is normally enough to scare the Zombies away.

During the time that Merilissel and Caelven have been partners she has come to greatly admire and secretly love him. He is brave and strong and the most handsome dragon she has ever seen. She is too shy too tell him though, because she thinks she is too plain and boring for him. She tries to be content with loving him from a distance and makes sure that he never notices her admiring glances.
