Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Airwings is one of Phoenix's dragons. Much like his mother, Cloudmind, he is absent-minded and dreamy. Phoenix's other hatchlings find him very boring when it comes to any kind of play, because Airwings's favorite thing to 'play' is to float among clouds and create small daydreams to mix and match. The hatchlings and most of the adult dragons find him a very dull hatchling for this, but Cloudmind encourages it and helps him practice his daydream magic. Airwings listens to everything she says, as he admires her more than anyone else.
