Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It’s almost disappointingly plain.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Little Scribelett loves to hang out with the other hatchlings of the cave and talks of how he can't wait to get his red marks. Now and then he gathers up red berries and makes a sort of ink to paint on his scales and wings here and there. No two of his paintings have been the same and he can't make his mind up on which design he likes the best, though he hopes his marks will look somewhat like those of his father.
