Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Small Haunting Beast is one of Phoenix's dragons. She is a daring, courageous little hatchling with a determined and feisty attitude. She is always the leader when she plays games with Phoenix's other hatchlings. Haunt has done everything dangerous that a hatchling with wings can possibly do, and more than once has almost lost her life for it -- and unfortunately, she has proved to be so charismatic sometimes that she can often get several of the other hatchlings to aid her in her plots and schemes. Plenty of the adult dragons in the clan could narrate times when various gaggles of hatchlings got themselves into loads of trouble, and Haunt usually has a part in the stories.
