Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sashimono is the leader of the Sylvain clan's quick-response team, which specializes in search and rescue missions. She instructs each member of the team in numerous skills, including tracking, combat, magic, basic field medicine, and hatchling recovery in various terrains. Because a dragon venturing outside the clan caves may go missing or encounter danger at any time, the members of the team sleep in shifts and are trained to operate alone or in pairs. Sashimono sets up these partners herself, based on balance of ability and temperament. In her spare time, she coordinates training with the team and teaches basic self-defense to other members of the family. As she was adopted as an egg from the abandoned pile, Sashimono feels a strong affinity with the family, and makes an effort to become familiar with as many other Sylvain dragons as she can, in case they one day require her aid.
