Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Yellow Cheddar does not live with the rest of his clan. Unlike Darzee and Danzee, who cannot walk, and Lonx and Herkemer who at least visit for holidays, Yellow Cheddar has never been in a cave for long. Well, unless you count a castle's wine cellar as a cave. With nothing else to do, he spends his days organizing wine bottles and melting cheese over a fire to repair various cuts and scrapes that he has acquired from hungry rats.
