Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Ever since it hatched, the sky has been full of very dark clouds.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing. It’s learned to use its new wings quickly and you now have a hard time keeping it on the ground.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

The small, determined dragonlet named Cosmic believes that she fell from the sky on the last evening of October, knocked to earth by a falling star. She tries to tell the other hatchlings stories about what it's like beyond the clouds, but they scoff at her imaginings. No-one would believe a tale that the faraway sky is always black, when everyone knows it turns blue during the day. Nor can they even consider the idea of a sky where there is no ground below and no down-ness. And who knows what kind of deluded dreamer would come up with a story that the stars, so icy-blue, so small and twinkling, were made out of fire... So Cosmic is left alone to watch night fall, and to wish her fondest wish once again: that there are other dragons out among the stars, and that one day they will come down to meet her.
