Gold dragons are the ones most often killed by humans, who consider their scales to be extremely valuable. These golden scales grant them a high level of protection, similar to armor, and they use this to their advantage in battle.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Despite being one of the most famed and admired dragons in the cave, Zanzibar the Golden lives in near isolation with his life-mate, Sharra. Although he may be well known for his majestic appearance, well mannered nature and prowess in battle, Zanzibar shies away from the attention he receives from his scroll-mates and thus, after proving himself a legendary warrior in battle during his youth, he cut himself off from the rest of the cave in hopes of avoiding their notice. Since secluding himself, Zanzibar only appears at times of great peril or alongside Sharra when she has ventured back to the cave to share a vision of things to come.
