White feathers ruffled as orange claws dug into the earth. The hen turned, gazing back at the dark shape of the barn from which she'd escaped. It had been awful in that rough-hewn structure that seemed ready to topple, forced to live in a nest smelling of molding hay that stunk of old manure. But it had been home. It was all she'd ever known and she longed to abandon her quest and go back. But it wasn't home, not any more. Not after the murder of her friend at the humans' hands. And she did not want her egg to suffer the same fate. There, across the path lay the dark opening of a dragons' cave. She'd seen humans there, moving through abandoned eggs, many taking one with them. Maybe one would pick her egg.

Hycallone does not know the sacrifice her mother made to let her live but goes everyday thinking about her. How could she know, when so few chickens are seen, how her name is a memory her bravery. But she will forever remember the day the chicken crossed the road.
