Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Raised by Obseddiun and Sardonyxiar, Obnyx is not an adoptee but rather their own blood son. Although the two warriors try not to show him any favoritism, they aren't perfect—especially his father—and outsiders can generally pick out which of the flock of black dragons at the Breedery were adopted and which are true offspring of the elder pair. Of course, looks help. Obnyx inherited his father's rangy build and his mother's fondness for the use of weaponry (as opposed to teeth, claws, and magic) so it's fair to say that he can be picked out by his looks and use of wing-spurs as much as by how his parents treat him. Obnyx is attracted to Zabaj and was hurt in the ego when she became obsessed with Voydd instead. To hide his wounded pride he pretends to mildly dislike both of the other blacks, but the truth is he's just jealous.
