And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Into others' pockets

She seems obsessed with stealing things

Like handkerchiefs and lockets.

When spotted she swiftly sprints away

And drops what she was stealing

Then shyly hides, sings, and sighs

'Til she is done concealing.

When she succeeds in snatching something

She knows not what to do

So she will sneak the snatched stuff back

To its owner, somewhere new

A scarf may switch from on a shoulder

Into someone's pack,

And she'll sequester in a shoe

The owner's money-bag.
