Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Sand Maker Pev is a Brimstone dragon. He likes to travel from place to place, carving figures for his clanmates to admire. He likes being perfect, and hates being dirty. Although he doesn't expect praises and comments on his sculptors, he still likes to brag about himself and his figures. The other hatchlings pretend to bow down to him, while behind his back, they call him a pompous little snob. Sometimes, Pev likes to daydream about building a huge town from the sandstone that he carves his statues from. However, everyone but him doubts that will ever happen.
