Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sokaru and his older sister, Faoni, do not get along very well. It's not that Sokaru dislikes his sister per se; it's just that she doesn't acknowledge his existence enough to his likening. In fact, if they weren't forced to talk to one another, his sister is likely to ignore his existence altogether. For Sokaru, this doesn't suit him at all.

Sokaru loves being in the limelight, and he commands it by impressing the instructors in the arena. Being a pureblooded black dragon means one has to be the very best at battle. Sokaru would have pride in the fifth best ranking if it weren't for the fact that his sister dominates the first. He claims that he is not jealous, he's just having trouble getting his sister's attention. He is frustrated that he can't do better than the mixed blood that holds the fourth position.
