And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Little LAFFe is the happiest dragon in the Clan, despite being frozen after falling into a mysterious pool, deep in the furthest crevice of the Cave. LAFFe is quick and clever, constantly collecting and gifting the gems he likes to mine for. LAFFe is self-named and will boastfully mention this to everyone he meets. His laughter, well-known in the Cave, inspired his name. His best friend, Yoshi 10, is teaching him to read and write. Unfortunately for LAFFe... dragons can't spell, and their grammar is terrible.
