Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Clever Guard is a born warrior, readying and raring for a fight. He joined Empress Dark Grizzle's army as soon as he could fly. His mother, who escaped from an evil wizard as a hatchling, has made sure that he knows both to never let his guard down and to never let someone in trouble pass by. Clever Guard is torn between his mother's two pieces of advice, as he feels that by protecting another, one's own guard is dropped. He also feels that if one is truly not letting their guard down, then they are not usually able to help others with their problems. He doesn't understand how his mother cannot see how her advice is a paradox. Because she is so busy working with the new police force or babysitting hatchlings, Clever Guard's mother is not available to help him work through his problem. He certainly hopes that Empress Dark Grizzle's impending war is a ways off so he has time to figure out which is more important, himself or another dragon in need.
