This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Bite of the Viper is best known for, well, his bite. Ever since he first hatched, he was a compulsive biter, chewing on everything he saw- which wasn't the best thing to do, since at that point he was little more than rotting flesh. Now Bite is a little livelier, despite being undead, and manages to overcome his blood-sucking tendencies. Still, it's recommended that people and dragons a like stay away from his mouth.
