Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Xiolta is a mute Guardian dragon who is often called Xio by his friends. The reason he can't communicate verbally is due to his tongue being missing for reasons unknown, and this means he also has some trouble with food. Xio's still able to communicate with telepathy, but doesn't have many words to spare anyway. In the cave, he's known as the guardian of the Eight Eyes of the World even though he doesn't protect the gems himself. Rather, Xio is in charge of protecting the guardians of the Eyes because Angel puts a higher value on the dragon's life rather than the gem's. Other than being a dragon of few words, Xio might also come across as a bit cold to those who manage to speak with him. He doesn't mean to; he tries to distance himself from everyone in case of a loss. One can only wonder as to why, as even Angel cannot coax his story out of him. He hadn't been born in her care; she had found him as an abandoned hatchling. It's anyone's guess as to what happened.
