Blazeback Dragons live in active volcanic regions, rarely straying from such homes. Their skin is thick and extremely heat resistant, allowing them to swim in hot pools of lava. This lava ignites the oils secreted along the Blazeback’s spine, and in combination with their ability to cast fire magic, can keep the flames going indefinitely provided the dragon consumes enough mana to maintain its strength. An impressive intimidation tool, the flames also provide enough heat to keep Blazebacks warm on volcanic summits.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

More calm and headstrong compared to some of his more wildly aggressive siblings, Fire Opal is disinclined to pick fights or start anything, aside from fires. He maintains a largely disinterested personality, becoming easily bored with others. He prefers to avoid his more hostile family, particularly his mother, Mare, with whom he has a rocky relationship. Fire Opal does have the capacity to display kind behavior, but these are rare instances dedicated only to the few dragons he actually likes. Forming a bond of any kind with Fire Opal is a challenge. Because he is so disinterested in being social, it can be a legitimate challenge just to grab his attention. It isn't impossible, however. There have been a few who manage to resonate with Fire Opal and earn his respect. These are creatures that seem to share some of Fire Opal's same ideals or have succumbed to similar trauma. He sees these few as worthy companions who warrant his protection and trust.
