This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Behold, seeker of the dragon lore, Magpyr of the Vampire Dragons. In her case, it is not unknown who turned her egg because the Vampire dragon responsible for it not only bit, but also stole it. The name of her new "mother" is Orloc. Magpyr was stolen from the nest of two Striped dragons who did not put up much of a fight when the more savage Vampire dragon appeared. They possibly would have abandoned the egg anyway if it hadn't been carried away by Orloc. Obviously, Vampire dragons don't make the best parents a young hatchling could wish for. It wasn't that Orloc and her companion had not tried. But as both had never themselves experienced a parent's care, they protected Magpyr and kept her in their cave but otherwise did not pay much attention to her. Therefore, she managed to develop wings and a gender but was not strong enough to grow up. She stayed with her "parents", though, and seems rather content with the situation.
