Terrae Dragons are primarily herbivores who prefer to eat from the tops of trees. However, due to their massive size, they must rely on small, specialized scales to absorb and convert energy from the sun. Since they live in tightly-knit groups, this form of energy absorption helps preserve the forests in which these dragons reside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

One of the first four eggs hatched by an unknown benefactor, Mat Zemli somehow became the de facto leader of the bunch. Her smooth and pleasant personality settled many early disputes between the other hatchlings and also led to her welcoming newcomers. Mat Zemli and Tishina decide together if newcomers may join the clan, carefully weighing their instincts against the newcomer's ability to contribute to the clan.

When Tishina's egg finally hatched, the Spotted Greenwing went into a panic over her lack of "maternal instincts." Mat Zemli never missed a beat, having gathered advice from many other dragons, and happily pitched in. She looked after the hatchling during the day, often carrying her around while she foraged. Tishina never feared for her child's safety while she foraged during the night when Mat Zemli curled around her and Slava settled on top. Mat Zemli still carries a soft spot for hatchlings, thus she eagerly accepts the abandoned eggs Slava brings home occasionally.
