Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Autumn was one of the last fall seasonal dragons in 2009, and wanted to remain young for the rest of his life, mostly because he wanted to cheer up Thais every other time of year that she seems depressed. Thais often treats Autumn like a nephew, which is why Autumn often calls her "Tante", which is French for "Aunt". He's a quite playful hatchling, and often brings joy among the adults when things seem tough.
