Gold dragons are the ones most often killed by humans, who consider their scales to be extremely valuable. These golden scales grant them a high level of protection, similar to armor, and they use this to their advantage in battle.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

A gentle, loving gold dragon, Serene is well known as the "peace-maker" of her cave. Named after her likeable demeanor and her famous lineage, Serene has never once thought of inflicting harm upon anyone or anything, even what would have been prey to a "normal" gold dragon. She has been teased many times for the generous way she acts, being stubbornly vegetarian and refusing to attack anything. She has even been called "a white dragon in disguise". Though she has several friends, Serene still has horrible memories of a gray dragon bullying her when she was a hatchling. However, these memories are faint and don't affect Serene much anymore. Her friends tend to call her "Serena" on accident, but she doesn't seem to mind, though she prefers to be called Serene.
