Hellfire Wyverns are so named for their foul tempers and fiery visages. Their social structure places all females above all males, due to superior physical characteristics and violent dispositions. Forced subservience of the males causes them to become vicious, petty, antisocial, and passive-aggressive compared to the aggressive and social females. However, orphaned hatchlings raised by foster parents of another species can develop surprisingly even tempers and mellow dispositions, proving that their defining unpleasant nature is, in fact, a learned behavior.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

In a certain country, superstitions and rumors concerning a hellfire wyvern of monstrous size were once commonplace. Said to haunt the barren wastelands of the north, elders warned that she would rain cold death upon those she took unawares. The youth of the land found these tales nothing more than legends meant to encourage them to work hard, and scoffed at them accordingly.

"Oh, I'm certain she'll appear... once hell freezes over!"

To the great horror of all, it did.

It happened in the blink of an eye; a summer night that turned suddenly freezing cold, a shadow that seemed as large as the black sky, a surge of fire that both burned and froze at once. Many lost their lives that day, and the kingdom was trapped in wretched winter for many years after.

Decades have passed since then. The land has returned to green. Men who once fought the demon have grown old, and warn with grim faces those young souls who laugh at the idea of such a beast.
