This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

This thing could hardly be called a dragon. It's half-formed, more a blob of flesh than a living body. It doesn't eat, it doesn't sleep—yet, it exists. What is the point of it existing when it cannot go through the motions of living... Sometimes the adult vampire dragons are asked that, by other dragons wishing to put the thing out of mind and misery; they do not answer though, and treat the hatchling as one of their own. They know that it can sense them. They know it feels their love.
