And look! It has grown feathers! It must be close to maturing.
Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Considering that he was the first Sweetling that Lumikkja received, Iroh was so sure that he was going to grow up and become one of the clan favorites. He wasn't sure how he felt about this—he felt he was content as a young hatchling, and wasn't exactly ready to grow up quite yet. Luckily for Iroh, as soon as Lumikkja saw his little pinfeathers coming in, she immediately froze him as a hatchling forever and gave him the name Cutie Iroh. For this gesture of confidence in allowing Iroh to resist entering adulthood, Iroh forever adores his new caretaker.
