Coastal Waverunners spend most of their time skimming the waves along the coast, snatching up their prey from the shallow waters. They have developed markings along the leading edges of their body that help disguise them as breaking waves. When they are not hunting, they enjoy playing among sand-dunes and shallow tide-pools. These dragons live in small but noisy rookeries. Some stories say Waverunners can fly for days on end without landing.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Zedong acts as a sort of scout for Damian's Crater clan to spy on the Island clan that resides out in the ocean. Due to the contested nature of the tunnel system and Mana cave that connects the two clans beneath the ocean's surface, it is often difficult for either side to effectively spy on the other above ground without being seen as they approach. Zedong's natural wave-patterned camouflage and passion for skimming across the sea made him the natural choice for observing the Island's activities above ground. He will spend hours on end circling the island from a mile away, the edges of his wings barely splashing across the breaking waves. In truth, he gets so caught up in the flying itself that it is rare for him to actually notice anything of importance, and his role as a scout is practically just an excuse for him to soar over the sea.
