Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Unlike many of the dragons in her group, Queen Matriarch Helqerka's title actually means something; she is the oldest of the female dragons of the group, and all other dragons defer to her or to the King Patriarch, her consort, Gezzartur. Helqerka is fiercely protective of the dragons whom she leads, thinking of them as her children and grandchildren, depending on their ages. She is very emotional, a great contrast to the calm and collected Gezzartur, but she is fairly just and impartial, and does her best to keep her emotions from getting the better of her in times of crisis.

A little known fact about the Queen Matriarch is that she has a fondness for grapes.
