Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Lohita Nuria came into being as a result of a time called the "Treasure Craze" by many of the older dragons of Elgar. It was at this time that Ember Nuria, a young human girl, learned that certain dragon eggs were worth fortunes. She immediately set off the find these rare dragons and sell their eggs. The first one she found was Lohita, whom she bargained from an old man who was selling odd bits of things at a marketplace. Ember took very good care of this dragon of course, but unlike the other dragons she had raised, she did it for money, not pleasure or love. Lohita noticed this, and also saw how other dragons avoided her with guilty eyes. Being sensitive, Lohita got upset and ran away. Orenda, who had been watching her, had to call on Gandalf to come and pull poor Lohita out of a hole she fell into. Then, wise Gandalf explained to Lohita that she was loved, and that he would talk to Ember about how she was being treated. Ember relented, but the Treasure Craze was not over yet.
