Dorsal Dragons are so named because they have large fins along their backs that can be raised and lowered at will. They use these fins to regulate body temperature; they raise them to cool off when they become overheated. The bright colors on the fins double as a means of attracting mates.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Luna, the first dragon in Leonis's valley, considers herself above the rest. Her own nickname for herself (and what some others have taken to calling her) is "The Queen of Darkness". She tends to lurk around in the shadows more than usual, and is amazingly seductive when it comes to getting what she wants. This includes the basing of a rumor that she once mated with Tyron, though he already has his mate.

For all her misgivings, however, Luna has proven to show an occasional good side. When a second frill like her came to the valley, she decided to give up her ways of acting superior based on age, and treated the newcomer, named Sethria, as her own sister. From then, Luna has taken kindly to hatchlings as they come, no matter what breed of dragon.
