Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It can fit right in your palm.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Astatine is very, very delicate; its health is so frail that it spends almost all the time tucked away in the back of the cave, most of its body wrapped in bandages. Luckily, its siblings from the close-knit Halogen family care for it a great deal, especially Chlorine. The Olive is incredibly protective over the tiny hatchling and can be seen carrying it around on the rare occasion that it's allowed outside.

Ever since Fluorine exclaiming "Aww—she's so cute!" upon seeing Astatine for the first time, the hatchling's gender has been debated endlessly among the Halogens. Astatine itself has shown a complete lack of interest in this matter, and so most use "it" or its symbol "At" out of convenience when referring to it.
