Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. But... where are its legs?

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

I'm Being Eaten has recurring nightmares about being eaten by a boa constrictor. The snake starts at her tail and works its way up higher and higher, and just as it's about to reach her head, Eaten wakes shrieking. Nothing she has tried has stopped the nightmares so poor Eaten spends most of her nights with Night Light the spirit ward trying desperately to not fall asleep.
