Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys playing in shallow water.

And look! It has grown fins, and likes to make bubbles in the water. It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Shortfish was once a human boy who went by the name Nemo. Nemo was an ever curious child who liked to spend his time hunting by the river near his house. One day, however, he stumbled upon something most curious. Before him was a deer, but not just any deer: a living buck made of solid gold. Nemo chased the deer throughout the wood until finally he had to stop. He found a quaint cottage nearby. The owner of the the cottage, an old woman, welcomed the boy in. Nemo soon found himself asleep in one of the cottage's extra beds, and awoke to find himself not only a dragon but a girl! Quite embarrassed, Nemo ran off before the old woman, who he figured out was a witch, could do anything else to him. Nemo ran and ran until he reached Chibi's Hatchery, where he was adopted by a young dragon couple and changed his name to Shortfish.
