Cheese Dragons are not actually alive. They are enchanted items of food that act almost identically to dragons. They have no need to eat, but they must “live” in humid environments or they will dry out and harden.

Like the little chicken in the cave, the owner has to work hard to keep the others from eating Boxlightner. The owner wonders when dragons haven't realized that this 'cheese' is alive. But, as long as it's still alive, the owner is happy. The smell of cheese is always better than dank cave smell.
