Balloon Dragons are so named because they are filled with a gas that makes them almost lighter than air, similar to balloons. However, they are not prone to bursting, as they are covered in tough skin and can deflate themselves if necessary. In addition, they generally are slow moving. They use their gas bladders to float to the tops of trees, where food is more abundant. They can shift their weight from their backs to their fronts, allowing them to reach leaves and fruit.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

True to her name, Jumbo is truly one of the largest known Balloon Dragons. However, that may just be because she enjoys inflating herself to such a degree that she floats high up into the air. Since her mother, Starfish, is a Tercorn, her family lives close to the ocean. Jumbo loves the view of the horizon so much, she floats high into the sky to get the best look possible. Of course, at a certain point, the atmospheric pressure becomes too intense for her, and she needs to come back down to earth. But that hasn't stopped her from pushing the limits and floating higher and higher with each trip. On her highest flights, she's come back with icicles forming on her body! Needless to say, this behavior worries her family, but she is always quick to reassure them that she's aware of the risks. Jumbo is a very charismatic dragon, just like her father. She's clever and witty but never too mean or sarcastic, she very much just wants to make others smile.
