And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Disappointed, Small Spirit never became an adult. Being smaller than the other dragons, she couldn't fly very high, since her wings were so small and weak. She wanted to be independent, and survive on her own, but she just couldn't. She was too weak and small to get her own food, and when coming in contact to fight another dragon, she needed another dragon to fight for her. The only place where she found happiness was in a cave in the wilderness where there were no other dragons and there was peace and quiet, and she could do stuff on her own. So most of the time she would just disappear in there, eating berries from a bush next to the cave for food source.
