Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

White Fang's Ghost was dropped a lot as an egg, causing, among other side effects, it to stop growing without an age-stopping spell.

Another side effect was that it is completely and utterly crazy.

White Fang's Ghost believes that it is the ghost of some strange creature called a 'White Fang.' It will often roam through the woods, howling, and it frightens even the bravest dragons with its rages against 'White Fang' haters.

The only dragon that can put up with White Fang's Ghost for excessive amounts of time is Heartless Fang, and that is only because Heartless Fang finds White Fang's Ghost rather amusing. In fact, Heartless Fang will often whisper into White Fang's Ghost's ears that his current enemies hate White Fang.
