Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Samourix, or Sam for short, was small as a hatchling, looking sickly as well as different from his siblings—though he was obviously a black dragon, his scales were a darker, glossier black. Other hatchlings kept away from him because of his differences, leaving him alone. Xylene, whom he now looks upon as "his" human, didn't care about his looks and gave him more attention, often spending her time cooing and fussing over him, as well as carrying him wherever she went. <br/>Sam quickly flourished into a massive black dragon with the same quiet, understanding nature of his father. Although his sheer size is deceiving, he is protective of hatchlings that are ignored or considered sickly. Seeing himself reflected in them, he is often seen caring for them, sometimes with Xylene's help, but always with patience.
